Ken,
I'm sure you would be safe usung 30' as the most common length on the NG.
This question was posed on the On3 list not long ago, and a Civil Engineer posted that most 30' legnth rail was cut down to 30 foot from longer used rail, for use on the narrow gauge. Remember, until the 20's, there were no flat cars on the D&RGW longer than 30'. The long rail under the 6300 series flat cars is 33'6", which had promped my curiosity.
