He was upgrading the track in as cost-effective manner as possible - and doing a GREAT job of it. It's not his fault that none of his "superiors" told him to preserve the trestles if at all possible by replacing only those timbers that needed replacing. Wasn't Hangman's rebuilt entirely when a movie shoot accidentally burned it down back in the 80's?? And if cost were the only consideration, the C&TS would have been diseaselized many, many years ago!

p.s. I like DIrk's suggestion, above - how about a week-long special work session to replace the culvert at m.p. 286.72 with a small two-span trestle next April, and a ten-day or two-week work session in late October to re-install the taller three-span trestle at m.p. 287.50 ??
