Aw shucks, Brian -
That was more than five (5, count 'em, 5) years ago, and you still haven't changed your Avatar! Have to admit, it was WELL worth the effort - even with all the static we Greenies got from the Blackies! In the end, even skeptic JBWX had to admit she didn't look all that bad. And #489 is featured prominently in Rich Murray's beautiful photo for August - THIS MONTH - in the Friend's 2015 Calendar!
In the olden days, my favorites were #482 - 'cause 4-8-2's are my favorite standard gauge locos, especially SP's 4300s - and #486 - 'cause of Will Woodard's designed but never built Lima 4-8-6. Of course a lot of us respect #483 for her MANY years as queen of D&RGW's and then C&TS's fleet (see [
ngdiscussion.net] for details), but I'll have to admit I agree with you that #489 - "The Painted Lady" takes the cake. Even before the Springtime (aka Green) Excursion she had been the target of criticism for "excessive" aluminium trim, but IIRC the high point of her notoriety came in 2008 - see [
ngdiscussion.net] et seq.
