You say that the majority of rolling stock is not road worthy. I wonder how true that is.
At the beginning, the C&TS had about 100 cars total in the collection. I haven't looked at the rosters lately, but it has to be up to 150 or so with the new passenger trains, and everything that's been donated. So how many of those can actually run?
Of course the passenger trains run. There are a number of flats and gons used in company service (cinders, moving heavy equipment, etc). There are maintenance (road work, rail, ties and ballast) trains. There is a train set used for charter freights. And many of the boxcars have been kept in good shape for storage of restoration supplies. Some of those have been moved around the yard a time or two.
My thought is that somewhere around 50% are actually useable. Of the rest, it feels like there are many that are just lacking brasses, and a recent air brake test.
Does anyone know what the numbers really are?
