My grandparents owned and operated a dairy north of Alamosa back in the day-- say the 1920's through the 1930's. I remember hearing how my grandfather would deliver milk cans full of fresh milk every morning to be delivered along the route of the San Juan and its predecessor. I know the milk went regularly to La Jara and Antonito and may have gone to Chama too. I have since wondered if some of it went somewhere south on the Santa Fe branch.
Interestingly, my grandmother was some sort of muckety-muck in the Odd Fellows/ Rebekah's organization. As such, she would make frequent trips all over Southern Colorado in the years before WW2. She frequently traveled on the Galloping Goose. As a kid, I asked her about traveling on the Geese. Her main memory was that the Goose often would stop and the Motorman would set out milk cans along the way. I guess being the owner of a dairy, it was something she noticed and remembered.
