Hi John,
The Drei Annen shot can be taken from a couple of spots on the outside of the curve, including down grade, but most downgrade trains will be bunker first.
The second shot is in Strassberg (double "s" looks sort of like a cursive f), on the Selketal line. There is only one train per day through here in this direction and it's in the afternoon. My shot had no sun, but it is actually an afternoon shot. The light should be good at 3:15 PM when the train gets there.
Steige is a great location, but once again, there is just the one train, out and back. The same train you shoot at Strasberg will be the one you shoot at Steige. Fortunately they have resumed operating between Stiege and Hasselfelde. The return climb out of Hasselfelde, with the village in the background is a lovely shot, even if they are normally bunker first.
If I am interpreting the schedule correctly, it looks like the train that goes to Hasselfelde will then proceed on down to Eisfelder and will meet the train coming up from Nordhausen in Eisfelder at around 4:40, so you might get two steam trains in Eisfelder at the same time. This is a cool location, where three lines come together. The station building is now a restaurant and beautifully restored.
Enjoy.
Michael
