Following up on what John said, about 1 km east of Drei Annen Hohne is the Hotel Drei Annen, just before the tracks cross the main road. Park in their parking lot and follow the foot path down hill 1/2 km or so until you reach a big horseshoe curve. This used to be quite open, but the trees have grown up considerably, but there are still some good positions here.
If you are up for a bit of a walk, follow the path down hill for a couple of Km until you reach the tunnel. The area is being selectively logged, so new positions open up that weren't there a few years ago. There are several good spots before you get to the tunnel.
Another idea is take the first train to the top of the Brocken and then hike down. There are a number of foot paths that parallel the tracks, although there is a section after the Gothe Weg veers off that you may want to walk along the tracks for a ways to avoid missing a train. Track distance from the Brocken to Schierke is 14 Km, but the line actually circles the Brocken as it climbs and you won't need to do that. There are plenty of foot paths and they are well marked. The total walking distance to Schierke is about 10 Km, but it's downhill!
The Selketalbahn is my favorite part of the system, but there is only one steam train per day that goes past Alexisbad. If you have the time, you can chase the two morning trains from Gernrode to Alexisbad and up the branch to Harzgerode, but my favorite part of the line is between Alexisbad and Steige. Be sure and and catch the train at Strassberg.
You can shoot in the engine terminal area in Wernigerode without a problem. Several engines are left outside at night so there are night photo opportunities. The Shops, at Westerntor station, are restricted and you won't be able to get much in the way of photos there, although I believe they do still offer a shop tour.
Maybe after your visit you will decide to go back and spend a week. Many of the nicest locations are on sections of the line that now see only one train per day and may require a walk in.
Just to show that you can get sun in Germany!
