in terms of raw numbers, sure. but remember the Airways were growing whilst the Railways were shrinking. I'm just trying to point out that it was the horseless carriage that was the real enemy and the the air lines didn't become a major factor until later than you were suggesting.
By the way, don't put too much faith in "the booming 1950s economy." Compared to the 1930's, yeah, it was great. To the 1960's? Not so much. And the 1950's contained a couple of recessions with the one in '57 being one of the worst in the 2nd half of the 20th century.
