airlines weren't serious competion for the railroads until after WWII.

really big jump for airways occured in late 1950's, once jets came in big.

bottom line of graph is 20. Airways don't even come over the bottom line unitl 1941.
Big competition for *any* mode has been, since the 1920's, the private car.
