airlines weren't serious competion for the railroads until after WWII.
From 1955 Moody's Transportation Manual pages a27:

really big jump for airways occured in late 1950's, once jets came in big.

graph on this page shows passenger miles with 1947-49 = 100
bottom line of graph is 20. Airways don't even come over the bottom line unitl 1941.

Big competition for *any* mode has been, since the 1920's, the private car.
