Contrary to the impression that this thread might give, not every steam locomotive burns those black dusty rocks! I enjoyed firing our wood fired Heisler quite a bit last summer and of the foopaws that I am not too embarrased to mention, missing the open fire door with the end of a 4' long chunk of wood comes to mind. I am pleased the report (after relocating my shoulder) that the backhead is quite sound. With the old girl up and rolling right along, it's kinda like being on the deck of a boat, holding one end of the chunk of rather heavy wood up with the left hand and with the right hand behind the end of the chunk to give it the mighty heave hopefully into just the right spot to fill a hole in the fire. Oh, and one more thing, while you are fumbling to pick up the chunk of wood that you just dropped on the deck, with the fire door wide open, the blast of cold air just lost you 5 lbs. on the gauge. You gotta love the challenge!
