Here's a small bit of advice:
1)Always place your shove back on the hook. I knew a fireman who leaned it against the tender whereuopn it proceeded to fall out of the cab. Engineer had to stop the train and the fireman had to walk past all those tourists to get his shovel. Plus, if you have to get out of the cab in a hurry you don't want that in your way....
2) Hold the squirt hose firmly whenver turning on the water and keep ahold of it until it has stopped spitting water when you turn it off. More people are injured by the squirt hose that anything else in the cab.
3) Don't throw your shovel in the firebox with the coal. Several fireman have done this trick (including myself), it adds a few more BTU but after that you have a real problem putting more coal in...
4) When taking on water don't fall in the tender tank as you move the spout. Not only does it look unprofessional but you'll have to fire in your skivvies until your clothes dry...
5) Never question the intelligence of your engineer. He got on that seat somehow and probably REALLY does know more than you ( I won't elaborate on this one to protect the names of the innocent and not so innocent...)
