#280 was sold to the City of Boulder in 1952. The day the freight left Durango to begin #280's journey to it's new home, passengers bound for Silverton had to get off the car.
#280 retained a semblance of the original paint scheme for over 30 years in Boulder, when we repainted it Green. #280 has been almost forgotten as having been a big part of the original "Silverton" consist.
The remaining wood platform coaches were retired at the end of the 1966 season because they were in poor condition and had been replaced with new steel coaches.
Both #126, the Baggage Car, and #212 were the last of the original wood cars to be rebuilt in steel at Burnham in the 70's. They had done such a good job with the others, #350 (Alamosa), #312, #323, #319, and #327 that everyone expected faithful reproductions of these cars as well.
Everyone was shocked and dismayed to find that both of these cars came back to Durango looking like coaches!
Dang!
