Hi,
My first ride on the C&TS was from Chama in 1990. The train apparently scared a bear and it was running up the hill on the high side of the track.
I also recall seeing a bear sitting on a rock as the D&S ran by. As soon as the train passed, the bear headed up the hill. Mom said it was like "O.K. my job is done posing for the tourists and now off to other things."
I saw a bald Eagle from the High Line on one trip and saw a dozen or so elks or dear around. I've never seen a snake farther west than Georgia - do not doubt they are there, just not seen them.
I like visiting in May when the herds are being moved by the cowboys. Amazing site seeing a herd moving through Phantom Canyon - almost wall to wall.
I've seen Cyotes and road runners but nothing recently (say since 1984), been to busy chasin' iron ho'ses.
