Bears being cautious, on both counts -
In more than 50 years of foaming around Lava Tank, its pump-house, The Whiplash, Big Horn and Sublette - and at all times of day from very early morning to well into the evening - I have never seen even one rattlesnake. I have neither been chased by a bear nor had my car smashed by a bull (as was reported here some time ago). Doesn't mean they aren't there - just that I have been lucky, I guess.
OTOH - if you're an uhg-ewe-lee old foamer like me - maybe them critturs is more scared of you than you are of them ...
