Coach 284 is a wonderfully restored car, but was rebuilt by the D&RG (before W) to a very different car from its “as delivered” appearance. As such it really represents its apperanece from the mid 1920’s on…
When built by Jackson & Sharp it had hoods (metal hoods beyond the end wall of the body over the platforms) single hung windows with arched tops, and very tall letter boards, different trucks and of course miller couplers… The lowering program in the 1920’s included new steel body bolsters.
Rebuilding the side walls to install new double hung windows called for a different, simpler interior treatment. Coach 292 on the C&TSRR has the earlier windows and original interior, but is far from presentable at this time.
