It turns out that I may not have goofed QUITE as much as I thought last week.
On making a print for Mike and his crew of that 1962 late-night K-37 backhead photo
posted above, I noticed the faint outline of what appeared to be a wash-out plug, so I
re-scanned the upper right portion of the negative using parameters that completely
washed out the pressure gauge, but emphasized shadow detail

If so, I probably climbed into the cab of #49
3 - which was parked behind - and in fact coupled to - #484 that chilly January night back in 1962. Consider also that #484 & #493 were parked across the turntable pit from the roundhouse, whereas #49
1 was sitting immediately next to the roundhouse, making the presence of a foamer or two thawing out in the former much less likely to be noticed by a hostler or night watchman
