A Pentax H3v with 50mm and 70-150mm lenses. Up 'til then I used my dad's Praktica - "Old Scratch" - which had a moderately decent 55mm lens but a bad case of cinderitis. My first real railfan event was S.P.'s last run on the Santa Paula branch in June, 1958 (see [
ngdiscussion.net]), and the second one was the three-day La Jara Jr. Chamber excursion from Alamosa to Silverton & back two years later (see [

Now that I have a really good scanner, I'm going back through most of my old stuff and digitizing the better OR more unusual shots. As noted above, editing out the scratches is tedious, but at least a few of them seem to be worth the effort. It turns out that I followed #484 and #493 out of town and up Bocea Hill (sp?) as far as the second grade crossing (beyond where the new hospital is located), and the large amount of snow in the later pictures lends credence to the date actually being January 31, 1962, when I would have been passing through Durango en route from California to Colorado Springs and the second semester of my junior year at General Palmer's own Colorado College
