I didn't GET RID of the VW;* I only moved it ahead a few feet so it wouldn't bug my eyes by crowding #483's pilot, in order to make the scene more balanced artistically. IMHO this doesn't affect the Chronosynclastic Infindibulum sufficiently to warrant my expulsion from the Loyal Order of Curmudgeons.
The main purpose of digging these old photos out in the first place was to create a screen saver to raise money for the restoration of #483, so my intent ten years ago was to show off #483 "artistically" in as many of the photos as possible (along with those provided by Ernie Robart, John West & Tom Gildersleeve). Since then I have realized that my shots are of histöric interest to many more people than I ever expected, and have been much more restrained when editing the newer scans before sending them along with the original slides to The Friends as a footnote to the Dorman Collection. In editing the new files - from a much better scanner than those done ten years ago - I have focused on color and sharpness as much as possible, and in only a very few cases have cleaned up poles and people which distracted significantly from the main focus of the shot. The yellow Ford and the crowd of onlookers will remain in the Cumbres Pass shot, for example, as they are essential parts of the overall scene.
As to the intrusive pole in the first shot on the root post, blame it on the inexperience of an 18-year-old wild-eyed foamer on his first fan trip using a borrowed camera to shoot only his third or fourth roll of slides. The pole can be removed by cropping (which would also result in cropping out much of the histöric bunk car in the background along with an histöric switchstand) so that only minor erasure of three unsupported wires would be needed, -OR- the pole can be left in to detract from the scene by pulling one's eye away from the hostler (and his see-gar), -OR- the post and wires can easily be removed by copying portions of the sky over them, as shown in the third panel of the edit sequence (which IMHO improves the scene without making it overly difficult to pin down the date).

* In a recent conversation with Olaf Rasmussen, he remembered the VW he was driving at the time as being a different color. If not Olaf's car bugging #483, whose car was it? Festus Frothjaw's??
