I do photography and have a few opinions.
One, I restore old photos as best I can. But do not remove any items. If I can't fix something that is blurry due to movement then it stays blurry. Torn or water damage can be fixed if not taking away from the original. If not, It stays as is.
With poles and such, I don't ever remove them in a photo. I have removed people though only because I would need a release to use the photo and that's not always possible.
As was mentioned, move to a different location in the area to not get certain items in the photo. Takes time but if you want to get a certain view or angle then take the time before removing things that may become important when dating a photo n the future.
That being said, about 8 yrs ago when I was taking a photo of the Como Roundhouse for the owners I walked all the way from the front of it (big red doors) out towards 285. I just got my 4th pacemaker (out of 5) and let me tell you it was a tough walk. I sat and sat and sat til the sun and shadows were just right for what I was looking for.
Then I walked back. Seemed like 10 miles. A looooooooong ten miles. Not really, maybe a mile. I was so tired after my walk and sitting for hours I decided to head back to Denver where I was staying at the "hospital hotel". As I pulled out of Como heading north on 285 I noticed there was a pull off that I could have used that would have gotten me within 300 feet of where I walked all the way from the roundhouse. It was all I could to sit on the side of the road and laugh at myself.
