I was told by the current president of the Gunnison Pioneer Museum that #268 will never leave the grounds. That has been the policy for decades. They consider the locomotive the key item in their substantial collection. The group is not a democracy. Its presidents are pretty much appointed for life and only a Gunnison native from a pioneer family need apply. The scenarios that have freed display locomotives for rebuilding elsewhere are not how things work in Gunnison. I live here. I know the politics and the personalities. I am 100% positive I will not see #268 run in my lifetime. And I plan on living a long time. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, as I would love to see it run more than anyone, but that is the reality.
