I think you might be thinking of 1994 when Les and I were up there doing the America By Rail-The Heartland video. We did a segment on the train at Boone. I still remember that high bridge and how Les climbed up there on the hill, and we watched in horror as his new Betacam SP deck came tumbling down toward the roadbed. That was about a $10,000 machine. Lucky it was undamaged and we were able to continue west to finish the video shoot. As the editor called it later "America By Rail- 7 seconds at a time". I remember we spent $1,000 a day on editing too.
Funny how you remember certain things!!!
One more NG rememberance of that trip. We were almost afraid to call the D&S cause we had heard they were anti-fan, or whatever. Anyway we were in Las Vegas, and decided to call them. They were most cordial and gave us a ride on the first train. Les rode while I chased and met him in Silverton. They were quite gracious and even offered some other things, but my mother passed away and we had to cut things short and head home, but at least were able to do the one day and finish our segment. Until this past September, 1994 was the last time I was in Durango, so 20 years!!!
To the other posters point about the kid climbing on the coach, I mentioned in another post somewhere that I was able to climb into the cab of 490 at Antonito where we had stopped for water I suppose. It was no big deal. I was never scared about stuff like that cause I was used to being around steam engines thanks to my dad. He was a live-long steam fan, and worked as a tower operator on the Long Island and New Haven during WW2. That was his contribution to the war effort as he was 4F I believe.
