Interesting it was the first such trip in 1952. My dad rode one in 1954 which was his introduction to the Colorado NG, as well as some UP he shot.
Then the whole family rode one in 1956. Power on the 1954 trip was 487 with switcher footboards both ways Ala-DGo-ALA, with 476 as number 7 and the N???? diesel to Silverton. In 1956 we had 490 as the power, and ironically passed a freight between Chama and Durango with 487 on it, which had a pilot plow. Dad had a movie clip of me climbing into the cab of 490 at the stop in Antonito. I was 5 and went up all by myself apparently without even asking. You wouldn't see that today.
When I was riding the train in September I was constantly reminded of some of those past trips, and how even today the place seems so remote and still has western adventure to enjoy!
