In this scene the flats are being loaded with granite sand, which the Sumpter Valley used for ballast in the early days. Note that there are fewer tracks than in the later photo. The yard was enlarged toward the left, and the cut bank is now much higher. Note also that the East bound loads contain both logs and lumber. Oregon Lumber Co., Baker White Pine and W.H. Eccles all had finishing mills in Baker, but Stoddard Lumber Co. hauled their logs there until the end. State Hwy. 7 now uses the cut in this scene, but some remnants of the yard can still be found.
