Greg; From what you tell me I believe my Colorado trips overlapped those your Dad made. It is very
possible that we rode some of the same trains.
I don't have the date in front of me right now
but in the early 60's I rode the doghouse of the lead engine on a Cumbres hill turn and made a tape of the trip. I believe the road engine was the 488 and the helper, 32 cars back, was the 489.
I know I made notes , especially about the recording sequence, but have no idea where they are. I just told my Bride that I wish I either
had a good filing system or a better memory and that it wouldn't hurt to have both. She said to look for something else and I'll run across
these things. She's probally right.
Anyway, due to some confusion about where we were to meet my nephew, who had driven our car up to Cumbres, went on to Antonito. I really wasn't dressed for a night on the mountain so, on advice
of the road engine engineer I rode with them to below Windy Point where the road crossed the tracks. Ed Gerlitz and a friend were camped
there and undertook to help me find my Nephew.
We found him standing beside the tracks in Antonito waiting for our train. Ed wouldn't even let me buy him a tank of gas or a meal. He went on back to his camp and we went on to Alamosa
where we had reservations and tickets for the three day train trip, Kiwanis Kolor Karavan, I believe.
I wish I had made more notes about the operation
but about all I remember about it was that they
really wound up the brakes on the cars they set
out but I thought you might be interested in the 32 car figure.
