Hi,
Based on further examination of the photos and the drawings I created, I suspect the 4-wheel passenger cars were about 26 feet long over end sills. The majority of the freight cars were PROBABLY the 23' 7" (over end sills) 2-truck cars. The body of the smoker was ABOUT 20 feet.
The Buena Vista photo shows a a stock car that is from the lot of 30 cars built in 1873 (5004, 5007, 5009, 5021-5047).
The flat car coupled to it looks to be a one of the 23' 7" flat cars. If this is so, the way car appears to be about half the length of those around her which would make her about 12'. This is the superstructure length of the 14' (over end sills) cars. I suspect this is a converted 14' 4-wheel box car.
Just a SWAG (Scientific WAG).
Could the baggage and smokers have been cut down (shortened)? Yes.
