The Magma RR grade is a good place to escape the city lights.
For those wondering why this is "n.g.", the Magma RR was originally narrow gauge, and was later standard-gauged. For a brief time, both gauges were in operation, with both three-rail and separated grade sections. Once the s.g. was completed, the n.g. was taken up.
The railroad serviced the town of Superior, where copper was mined, some 30-ish miles east of Phoenix AZ. Three s.g. steam locos, all 2-6-0's (as I recall) were eventually replaced by diesel. This may have been the last shortline to run s.g. steam. One of the steamers is on display in Scottsdale.
Mining ended years ago, but the s.g. rails are still in place. Dream on...
