Phil Hastings wrote an article about the D&RGW narrow gauge,
'Into the Freezing Darkness', IIRC, that was published in the April, 1956 issue of
TRAINS magazine - IMHO one of, if not THE best issue ever! It also contained a fabulous two-page spread of photos on one the the last runs of S.P.'s cab-forwards on the Modoc line (three on one train!), and an excellent story on a C&O 2-6-6-2 still in use fetching loads of coal from the branch-line mines. I'm pretty sure the photo you describe was one of several published in that issue, which I still have - buried somewhere in a trunk in the back closet
