I bought all but the 35-350 new and have never regretted it. I had a cheap 70-300 and probably used it for about 50 photos in 4 years, it was very marginal at best. I lucked into the 35-350mm L lens at an estate sale for $75! You can find them on Ebay for around $800-1200 used. Since I really don't shoot much telephoto stuff, I'd never invest that much in one.
Unless one is really "hard" on equipment, I think it's better to buy an inexpensive body like a Rebel and spend the money on good glass. A fancy camera won't make a great image with most cheap lenses!
I'm somewhat "old school" having mostly worked in large format and view cameras. I'm a slow and methodical photographer, ofter taking several minutes to make a photo. I shoot mostly in manual mode or aperture priority, use a tripod and shoot RAW files. I haven't used 1/10 of the features on my 7d. About the only menu items I use are mirror lockup, format, and with new lenses, the micro adjustment for auto focus!
