I am a Nikon guy myself and still use the Nikon D70. It will be 10 years old this spring and I am looking at its replacement currently. Back when I was looking for a dSLR, I held both a Canon (the first rebel I think) and the D70 and the D70 just felt better. I have always liked the way Nikon lays out their bodies and still do.
For its replacement, I am thinking a D7000 or D7100. I agree with Kevin, that full frame is the way to go and am considering a D610 but since I don't shoot as much as I used to a DX sized body will probably do me fine.
I use an 18-70mm f3.5-4.5 for my walk around lens. I have an 80-200mm f2.8 to cover my zoom and then a 35mm f2 for extreme low light and portrait work. If I end up pulling the trigger on a new camera, I might opt to get an 18-140mm lens to replace the 18-70.
For trips were I don't want to carry all three lenses, I rent an 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 VR lens from a local camera rental place and while the quality in a lens like that isn't near what the 80-200 f2.8 has (or even the 18-70 in my mind) it defiantly works for those non train vacations. The photos from Maine from this past August that I almost have ready to upload are from this rental lens and are quiet good considering the goal was to travel light.
