Well, I probably have learned something here. I never noticed the differences in the arch "bootlegs" of Lunk-ies and Powells. In that case MAR 7 has a Lunk-er. I am quite sure it is the same whistle it had at the end in AZ as it matches recordings that were made there. The tall hoot it carried in the early 1960's is now on MAR 6, stuffed and mounted in Scottsdale, AZ.
Yes, Powells have a unique kind of "growl" to them that smoother Crosbys don't have.
But they are all cool.
The best whistle to ever grace an engine in Chama will always be Rayonier 120's on 489.
I recall one night in June 1988, the night before the RMRRC's 50th anniversary trip. The late Marty Fischer brought 489 and a cut of freight cars off the hill in the midst in a serious thunderstorm at about 1am (don't remember why she came in that late). It was a sound that cut to your very soul. I wish I had recorded it. It would have put Stan Kistler's recording to shame.
