That was the new Lotschberg Base tunnel, that together with the Gottard Base tunnel form the Alpine Transit initiative designed to get trucks transiting between Northern Italy and Germany or France off the Swiss highways by speeding rail transit and hauling trucks on flatcars through the tunnels. The Lotschberg Base Tunnel is currently the longest rail tunnel in the world, soon to be surpassed by the even longer Gottard Base Tunnel. But from a tourist standpoint, the trips will be much less scenic with intercity express trains using the new tunnels and only local trains running over the more scenic original routes. The good news is there are no plans for a tunnel under Bernina Pass, although meter gauge lines have their share of long tunnels.
