Hey Chris, we are no less obsesssive about SVRy than many of the Colorado NG officianado's that can name the location of many seemingly obscure locations on the RGS,DRGW, C&S etc. shown in a 100 year old photo. Like with many of the later folks many of us Sumpter guys have walked miles of old ROW with an old photo in hand to find the exact location. I'd like to spend a lot more time doing this in future years.
Now as to the steam shovel, that is the only photo I recall seeing of it. Maybe someone else can think of one. It was a Marion Model 30, Ser. #3142, Blt.1913, 1 Cu Yd. Cap., retired 5-1-37 and sold to OLC. When Baldwin 4-6-0 #50 was brand new in 1916, it's first assignment was work train service hauling decomposed granite that was being dug out of the cut backs at Larch by the steam shovel per daily dispatcher reports.
