Some of them had a sliding coupler operated by an air cylinder, and some had a dual gauge coupler pocket. This couple pocket was a standard design that is used on the D&RGW idler cars like the one at the Museum and on some of the engines.
A number of the picture books show diesel switchers at both Salida and Alamosa with the sliding couplers and I think some of the standard gauge steam them too. Will have to look at the pics as I forget.
