Dave:
Bit more trivia for you. In August of 1922, the D&RGW authorized installation of 85 pound rail in the round house pit tracks to replace 52 pound rail.
They also laid 2.35 miles of main line through the Alamosa yards in 1922 to replace segements of 30, 40, 45, and 52 pound rail. Hard to believe that there would still be 30 pound rail in the yards in 1922.
Also, the Grande sometimes relaid rail several times. I gave you the 1947 data, but I found an earlier item in which the D&RGW issued an order in 1923 to replace the third rail in the track between Alamosa to Antonito with 65 pound rail to replace 52 pound rail.
Some of the rail probably was laid at several places over the years. Typically rail was taken from the standard gauge for the narrow gauge, so much of the narrow gauge rail was second or third hand. In addition to the rail from the Sslida to Leadville dual gauge, the D&RGW purchased some second hand UP rail for use on Poncha Pass in 25.
I have a very detailed report of the rail relays from Antonito to Durango starting in 23 in preparation for the coming 470s.
Railroads never threw away anything that could possibly be used again. In 23, the Grande moved the turntable from Alamosa to Monarch. Who would have thunk it?
