August 1967. I was headed from California to Philadelphia for school, so I followed the operation one way from Durango to Alamosa. What I remember or the pix show of the operation was 487 and 497 doubleheaded out of Durango, 497 went through to Chama, the next day there was a two engine train up the hill to Cumbres, and then the 493 ran through to Alamosa. Can't find any record of what engine was the helper up to Cumbres. The train from Cumbres to Alamosa was short. From Chama to Alamosa the train had two cabooses, and somewhere I got the impression the second caboose was for a Trains mag contingent.
