Well, Doug -
IF they had taken off the rods between the first & second drivers, the front axle
would have been separated from the rest of the drivers (and the pony truck). It
would still have been supporting the front of the engine, but would not have been
powered, so you would have had a 2-2-6-2.
(A certain notorious revisionist would probably have called it a 2+2-6-2 or a 2-2+6-2. I dropped my subscription to
Trains for their ridiculous
attempt to re-write the 100+ year history of the Whyte classification system when referring to classic steam, so this point is now moot.)
