One of the main reasons U.P. #3985 was converted from coal to oil is that it is a LOT easier to pump oil into a tank than to use a manual Skip-loader (or a mechanical skip-loader) to fill a coal bunker. "Wooding up" is even more of a chore - just ask Ditty Markoff

The American Freedom Train selected ex-SP #4449 (and ex-T&P #610) for use on the vast majority of its two-year excursion because of the above. Ross Rowland really wanted his coal-burner to be used for the entire trip, but it just wasn't practical.
IIRC, all of UP's 4-8-4s and 4-6-6-4s were built as coal-burners, but many of them were later converted to oil for use in the far west. One of the major challenges in the restoration of 4014 will be finding an efficient way to burn oil in that huge firebox
