No. Firebox sheets are the same size whether coal or oil fuel is used.
Coal burns hotter than wood and has more BTU's. I could see where using coal in a wood stove could cause problems because the stove was built of thinner steel. I tried burning coal in my wood stove with poor results. I had to prop the damper open to get enough air into the fire to get the coal to stay lit. Further, the draft up the flue pipe and chimney wasn't good enough causing the pipe to soot up badly and need cleaning about every other day. It was a mess, I went back to wood.
The C&S used to regularly change fuels on Clear Creek passenger engines in the early 1900's.
