Since abundant synthetic coal would put them out of a job, as terrible as that job may be. And I rather doubt that Peabody et al would appreciate the competition.
Weird you should mention that idea, though - my dad actually developed - and patented - a method for creating very-long-chain humus-like molecules from ordinary trash (like paper and cardboard, corn husks, etc.), but was unable to find a way to concentrate the resultant friable powder enough to get it to burn. And since Jawn Henry had long since been scrapped, there was no way to test it as fuel for a powdered-coal turbine.
One problem that he had was the name he chose for his synthetic coal. Getting funding for something called Syn-Coal (sink-hole) proved more than a little difficult
