Hello all -
Last weekend I decided to escape the rain here on the coast, and headed to the high desert country of Goffs, Searchlight and Boulder City. Of course knowing that Dan and Ditty Markoff would be at the Neveda State RR Museum with their beautiful little #4,
'Eureka', had nothing to do with my decision
. . .
And a good decision it was! At the museum in the thriving metropolis of Goffs, only the schoolhouse area was open; the railroad artifacts were behind a sign that said "private area". I didn't see anyone around who could give me permission to do some exploring, so I didn't stay there long. Nothing in Searchlight caught my eye, so I passed on through and headed up the long, lonesome road to Boulder City. I arrived a bit too late for Saturday's activities, but on Sunday morning I found a highly varied assortment of volunteers assisting Ditty with "wooding up" the Eureka

While this was going on, Dan was filling the tender's cistern from a slowly trickling hose. He estimated at least twenty more minutes would be needed to fill the tank, so I took just a couple of shots of #4 gleaming in the clear morning light, and headed downtown for breakfast:
I lucked out and found a great little 'Mom & Pop' café on the old main drag at 5th street – 'The Southwestern', IIRC – and enjoyed something I'd never heard of before: an
Italian Omelet, made with meatballs, bell peppers, onions and Marinara sauce! YUMMY!! I ate heartily, knowing I'd need lots of energy to tackle the brush (creosote bushes?) blocking a clear view of the engine from the sunny side
