I am resurrecting this old thread to share some new information on the NY&MB I found in the
New York State Engineer's Report on Railroads for 1879.
Some statistics on right of way, track, and equipment:
(The mileage numbers are somewhat confusing, but I believe the 5.44 miles refers to the portions of the line between East New York and New Lots and between Manhattan Beach Junction and Manhattan Beach that were owned outright, with the remainder of the 18.95 mile total being operated under lease.)
Operating statistics for 1879:
(So it would appear the NY&MB did run freight trains after all!)
Operating expenses for 1879:
Under "Contingencies", note the $10.824 spent on
music (a live band to entertain the passengers? -- whatever the purpose, it was more than the company spent on coal!), as well as $281 for fireworks and $500 to hire a professional swimmer. (Was this gentleman perhaps a diver engaged in underwater dock repairs?)
That steamboat service would also be recorded as a contingency is confusing to me, since I had thought the steamboat connection between Manhattan and Brooklyn was an integral part of the railroad and so should have been its own line item, but that's how they did it.
