Good "pondering" to me. Cold indeed have been from plow damage, as the Uintah did have at least one "bolt on" small front plow, unlike the big wedge plow that was used on Baxter Pass. This photo and a corrisponding one were both taken in the winter, so it could be. The #30 was never up ont he pass ( wheel base was to long for hte sharp corners) so maybe the Uintah had a small pilot mounted plow that they used on the north end of the line around Dragon, Rainbow, & Watson, where the snow was only a foot deep at the most.
