Jim and all, I was going to point out before I got to the end of the thread, that David Eccles had very ambitious plans for the SVRy which likely would have resulted not only in a through rail route to the south but also upgrades to the SVRy. At the time of his death plans were in place and anounced to extent the line to John Day during the year 1912 which of course was the year of his untimely death. I wonder if we would have seen an improved route without the switchbacks on Dixie? Had SVRy gotten through the mountains to Burns perhaps the Oregon and Northwestern and the UP branch to Burns would not have been built. This would have been some considerable traffic at least till the 1980's?
