This is the best photo that I have relating to your question. It was taken in Seattle as the locos were being shipped up to Skagway. So, they had not yet been used. I would say that the smoke box is gray or maybe graphite. As for the rest of the boiler, I think the lightness is glare from the sun. The cab roof and the hose to the right front of the loco have the same glare. But, you can see that the front of the smoke box is gray or graphite and that there is no sun glare on it.
This one is the best I have for the lettering. The little "K-28" on the lower right of the cab is the same Times-New Roman lettering that the D&RGW used. The other lettering, as you can see is block.
