I was doing some research to locate the Crested Butte Branch in relation to the highway in Ghost Railroads of Colorado and noticed a short paragraph mentioning a portal being found on the west side of Cottonwood Pass for a never completed tunnel. The existence of a 3 foot gauge axle was used to suggest it was the beginnings of a railroad tunnel and supposedly the Rio Grande was considering a line from Buena Vista to Crested Butte. The tunnel was discovered in '57-'58. Anyone know any more details on this or if its even true?
