The locomotive and tank car were pulled out of the gulch for about $45,000 and locomotive repairs cost around $20,000. When the locomotive was returned to Leadville it was placed on the wye in Leadville and when another locomotive came to retrieve it, #6223 was accidently pushed off the tail end of the wye. The wrecking crews had to once again rescue the locomotive and finally it was sent to Lincoln, Nebraska for repairs.
The unit was rebuilt with a low nose. It returned to the Climax branch and was the main locomotive until the closure of the Climax branch to freight traffic in October 1986. It was than sent to Denver and used in yard service. It was renumbered BNSF 6111 and retired in 2003. I believe it may have been scrapped in 2005 or 2006 but I am not completely sure.
