Hi Rich,
I understand why you would be conflicted, as we all want the C&TS to succeed and although charters can be good plus business for the railroad and the communities around it, the tourist trade is where they need to focus their efforts. My contention is that
Rio Grande on the tender rather than
Cumbres & Toltec will not matter in that effort, but obviously opinions differ.
You mention that the movie industry figured it out 100 years ago. If you have ever seen movie lettering on a train, you would be amazed at how primitive it can be, because the movies can control the light angles and make sure that edges don't show. Most people don't realize that even on a sunny day, film crews are pouring on more light with lights and reflectors. With a charter, we have to depend on the sun and when it gets a bit back or top lit, edges and changes in surface gloss will show up.
The railroad is currently quoting $2,000 to paint out the
Cumbres & Toltec with removeable movie paint and then apply vinyl
Rio Grande lettering over the patch. The vinyl would be removed at the conclusion of the charter and the movie paint pressure washed off. That is not an unreasonable price, but will likely result in a glossy patch surrounding the
Rio Grande lettering. Way better than the truly horrible magnets (see attached photo) but not as good as having the engine actually painted in
Rio Grande and allowed to naturally weather over the course of a season.
