Randall, while I agree with you to a degree I think we are talking very different items. The videos are a made-up artform, or product, or whatever you want to call it, and as such it can be called anything under the sun.
A railroad can be called anything as well, especially when its owner wishes to change colors, names, or whatever.
I guess my concern is that the historical words are thrown around in every fashion, for things on the C&TS, and as a marketing tool in ads and on the website. Yet one of the truly remarkable historic artifacts(the engines), do not show that history. This line was THE LAST class one steam freight railroad in the U.S. to operate in regular service(1968). That is significant and that fact alone is why the railroad is still here today, both engines and rails. So if one is going to depict the steam era in the Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado counties where the 64 miles remain, it would only be proper to historically letter things that remain that were used by the Rio Grande(or D&RGW if you wish). One of the big things the FOTCS railroad does is rebuild and historically letter old freight equipment and other things, so why should the engines be any different. If these engines were not originally operated in this region, then by gosh I have no issue at all with someone lettering them whatever they want, cause they would have no historical significance to the region. A good example is the engine on the San Luis and Rio Grande. Yet, ironically it is lettered Rio Grande!!! They wish they had a real D&RGW 2-8-2 or something else, but you can bet if they did, it would be authentically lettered. Why can't the C&TS do the same with their engines? I do see the logic others bring up about marketing, but then I don't feel this is just any old tourist railroad, its something more historic and thus warrants "Doing the whole railroad correctly,not just bits and pieces".
I didn't want to start a big deal on the board, cause like I said I will send a letter and see what happens. I suspect nothing, but then I will have tried!!!
