...are the enemies of great photography. Bernd and Pete did their best to overcome those challenges....by ensuring we had little time to eat or sleep, and the miles were covered as best they could be in darkness and discomfort. In terms of the photographic results, I think it was all worth while.
Photo line discipline is a pain pleasure thing. A disciplined photo line will ensure everyone gets the same decent but probably mediocre result. A lot of us want to be more creative, and that clearly does result in an element of chaos. But usually folks work together reasonably well.
The fact we had two leaders definitely resulted in some confusion. But there simply was not enough time for Bend and Pete from two different worlds to totally coordinate their thinking. High risk, high reward. Perfect? No. Worth the try? I definitely think so.
The Antonito to Cumbres day was long. Too long. About 3 a.m. I made a decision to motorcade rather than ride. That definitely was easier on my aging body, but I also missed a few great shots. But I also got a few good ones the folks on the train didn't.
Over all I consider the charters a big success. Not perfect, but a great change of pace from usual charters that pay little attention to historic authenticity and tend to offer the same old same old photo ops.
