Re: 1949 Baldwin Mallet steams in Brazil

Last used in 1974? I was down there in the spring of that year, specifically to see them in use on the Lauro Muller line. However, the branch was using Alco Mikes instead. My repeated interest in the trio inspired Gilberto Cabral to pull one out of the shed and fill the boiler with water. "For you Mr.Tom, tomorrow we run Mallet to Lauro Muller", he exclaimed with enthusiasm to me.
Alas, the train of empties that I chased that afternoon was the last one to ever run on the branch as it was washed out late that evening and never rebuilt.

I made up for it some by running 2-10-4 309 on the mainline and one of
the little Pacifics in the yard.
